A few weeks or so ago I woke up one morning and the 2nd toe on my right foot hurt. I could barely bend it downward and it hurt to walk on it. The top of the joint was painful to the touch as well. That morning I hobbled down to the kitchen and made an ice pack, iced it an took some ibuprofen. It felt fine later on that day and didn't bother me again for weeks.
This morning I woke up at 5AM and the toe hurts AGAIN (there was no pain 6 hours the night before when I went to bed)! Iced it and took some more ibuprofen and it's feeling better, but still hurts a little.
I ran 5 miles on Sunday with no problems and didn't run yesterday, so I don't know what the is going on with it. I run several times a week but the pain doesn't seem to coincide with my running schedule.
thanks for any help you can provide

It could be many one of many conditions and without a physical examination it is impossible to give accurate advice. From the description of the pain it sounds like tendonitis of the second toe. You need a biomechanical evaluation from a chiropodist to determine if your running action is causing the pain. The pain does not necessarily have to be immediately after running as it can take time to manifest. Other possible conditions include hammer toes, claw toes, stress fracture and many more. You need to visit a chiropodist/ podiatrist.

Thanks Dr. Foot for your response. If the pain flares up again I'll make an appointment with the podiatrist. I'm keeping a log of when it hurts and when I run so I can see if there is any correlation.
thanks again,
Eric
