Hi Doc,
I have discomfort in the toe joint located under the joint of my 3rd toe kind of between the pads of the ball of my left foot. It feels as if the joint or bone has become enlarged on the bottom of the bone/joint. I can feel a distinct protrusionof the joint/ bone or swelling of the area and it appears to be only in this one toe joint area . I am 38 years old, 6 feet tall weigh 198 lbs and exercise regularly ( walking on a tread mill and weight training) at least 4 times a week.  I wear good running shoes that I think fit well. I just noticed this pain over the last 2 or 3 weeks and it becomes more painful or pronounced when walking on hard surfaces without shoes (i.e. with no padding under the foot). Any ideas what this may be and what the cause and treatment may be? There are no other symptoms and otherwise I am in good health. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

You need to visit a chiropodist to determine what the protrusion is i.e. bony, fatty tissue, naval swelling or ligamentous damage. Simple silicone metatarsal pads will alleviate pain from the area but you should seek professional advice to determine the underlying cause of the pain.
