Two nights ago I woke up with a very painful second toe!  It is now twice it's normal size and pink/red.  I've hobbled around since, but today I can hardly place it on the floor, and the pain now can be felt below the toe, both on the top of the foot and on the sole.  I've previously had one or two infections at the top corner of the nail, and initially suspected the nail was causing problems again.  But on inspection there's no infection, and if anything although the whole toe is swollen, the pain seems to be coming from lower down.  I can't place that I've received an injury to it, or overworked it.  I have upped my time in the gym, but my feet haven't played a huge part in that?

Sorry I would like to be able to give you advice but you need to visit a podiatrist/ chiropodist for an examination. This may have been caused due to damage of the ligaments in the toe or even the sole of the foot causing the toe to contract. You need to confirm if indeed an infection is not present also ASAP.
