I am, or was, a keen runner and cyclist.  Over the last few years I have started to have problem with my left leg which I am sure are due to irregularities in the front of my foot.  Put simply my left foot toes have a tendency to 'scrunch up' and this impacts my foot placement, my running and cycling style and can sometimes lead to back pain when I run.  I've seen several people over the years who generally recommend orthotic insoles.  These don't work at all well as the problem is really with the front of the foot.  Recently I tried DrFoot's toe support product and I think that helped a bit, perhaps because it helped to support my big toes?  I do feel that I could do more, however, if only I new what the real problem was...

The problem may be that your clawed toes are leading to your over pronating (rolling in of the foot) which leads to your back pain. Usually it is the over pronation at the subtaler joint (joint in foot) that causes the claw toes. You should visit a podiatrist and ask them to make you a custom made otoform toe prop. This is made of soft pink material and needs to be molded exactly to your toe. If you explain your symptoms the podiatrist should increase the thickness under the toes to prevent them from scrunching. The other treatment option is surgery which will straighten your toe. Foot surgery has improved by leaps and bound aver the last 10 years, I have seen many successful post toe operations recently. I would start with the otoform and if that does not stop the symptoms it may be worth exploring different surgical options.
