Dr Foot-
I am a 29 year old male and I'm in the Air Force.  I injured my foot about 4 years ago while going thru Ranger School (Lots of walking thru the woods, carrying lots of weight in a rucksack).  Since then, I have been working thru the pain (including 2 trips to Afghanistan).

In January of this year it became worse.  I went to the doctor, they did an MRI and a CT scan.  The diagnosis was - Avascular Necrosis in my navicular bone, a couple of bone spurs and chips, and the navicular has a non union fracture.

I was put in a cast for 8 weeks (didn't help).  The AF is basically saying that there is nothing they can do for it.  I'm probably going to be medially discharged / retired.

Do you know of any procedure that would help? Do you know of a specialist in this field that could fix me?

Hello

I have actually given your post a lot of thought and I have asked a few colleagues who are podiatric surgeons. We have all agreed that it would be very difficult to return to normal air force activities with avascular necrosis of the navicular and other bony spurs. Surgery can make the area comfortable to walk but strenuous activity may be difficult.

Sorry I could not be of more help.
