Hi

I dont know if this is the right forum to post in (sports injurys) but I couldnt really find a better match.

I've had problems with my right foot for about 10 years now and just recently I have been to see a podiatrist to do something about it. He recommended custom made insoles as he said that my feet were quite pronated and that these insoles would help with my problem. I told him about the discomfort I had when wearing shoes especially at the front part above my toes as my foot rolls in quite a bit and that I had to wear shoes that were quite a bit big so my feet could just roll around inside as my right foot is very flexible and feels like its rubbing if the top of the shoe is touching too much. He didnt really seem to understand that I couldnt wear shoes to fit as they hurt and said I should buy shoes that are right for me as this would stablise my feet. Also my feet tend to swell, not to an extreme degree but enough to cause burning, tingling and soreness and a feeling of my shoes becoming tight. He did some tests but could find anything physically wrong and that maybe if it didnt get better I could with a scan.

Anyway I've been wearing my insoles for about 2 months now and although I feel my foot is more stable I am experiencing pain in my right foot. It took a while to get used to the insoles as I felt I was walking on the side of my foot but I dont notice that anymore. I bought a pair of wide fitting motion control trainers to put the insoles into but when I stand or walk for more that an hour or so I get a pain right on the top of my foot where I have a vein and eventually it goes right down to my big toe to a point I cant walk anymore. I thought at first maybe I might have been lacing my shoes too tight but i only lace enough to hold my foot inplace. Also I still feel like the shoes are rubbing, maybe I have just got a sensitive foot or some kind of tissue damage??

I dont know if this seems like a strange kind of condition but I've had it for 10 years now and it really is getting me down as its stopping me doing the things I would like to do. Any advice would be really welcome :)

Regards

Rob

Also I thought i would add that the front part of my feet especially the right one seems kinda sensitive too if I hadnt already put that. Any shoes I buy hurt my feet after a while as they feel like they are putting too much pressure on the front part above my toes. I'm sure they are wide enough and now I think there could be something wrong at that part of the foot too. In the past I've kinda got round this by buying the widest shoes available and then taking out the insoles just to stop what feels like too much pressure. This leaves the shoe too wide and my foot tends to move around a lot but I dont feel the rubbing/pressure.

Firstly you should not use orthotics in motion control trainers as you will have to much compensation for your over pronation and your foot will over supinate causing pain at the top of the foot. I have been trying to get a mental picture of you foot condition but it is difficult, if I understand correctly your fore foot is hyper mobile which is causing foot pain. I really could not give specific advice as a physical examination is essential in your case. I would seek advice from a second independent podiatrist.

Thanks for the reply Dr foot,

Sorry for not describing the condition in more detail. I'm not too sure of the meaning of the term hypermobile but if it means very flexible and flat footed then yes. My foot is very sensitive also to shoes. If I can feel the shoe touching the area around the front near the toes then I will feel stinging sensations, burning and a general feeling of discomfort. I dont get any blisters or marks on my feet but just the friction from it rubbing will cause pain.I did take out the insoles of the motion control trainers but I will try and get some stability ones and see how those go.
I went back to see the podiatrist today who went through a few things with me. He firstly said the new shoes I bought for my orthotics were a too loose and tightened them up. He did say that my feet were hyper sensitive and possibly some tendon/tissue damage at the front part and that having shoes that were loose on my feet is totally the wrong way to go about my condition because the friction caused doesnt help. I explained that I had to wear shoes really loose as it hurts my feet to tie them up and he recommended I got some walking socks with a dual layer in to help with the pains. He hoped that the pain will subside in my feet within the next few months but if it doesnt then i should go back.
I hope i worded this a little better than the last time.

thanks again

only me again

After the last couple of days of my foot being really sore i've decided on getting a mri scan. If i had ruptured a tendon or something similar in my foot would it effect all my foot and make it sore? The pain is getting to a point where i just cant take it anymore and am seriously considering changing my career (decorator) because of this.
Just today for example I had the burning stinging inflamed type pain in my right foot making it virtually impossible to keep my shoe on. Being in a warm environment seems to have this kind of effect all the time. Then the pain started on the top of my foot slowly working its way down to my big toe after a couple of hours on my feet. I took some ibruprofen in the afternoon and eventually it went away on the way home which felt like heaven.
But 10 years i've had this now, after seeing 3 podiatrists and 2 chridopodists (spelling) in this time all they have offered me is orthotics. Sometimes I think " Is this pain I have just all in my head" because none of the specialists I have seen seem to listen to my problems and just throw insoles at me. I know the right way to go about my problem is by using orthotics but if I cant wear the shoes comfortable then how can I treat the underlying problem?
Anyway sorry for going on so much but i'm just feeling a little down today :O  Does anyone know a good podiatrist in the leeds area that would be able to give me advice on getting an mri scan done?

Thanks for listening

Rob
