My baby daughter was born with a twisted foot outwards, she has been in casts for 13 weeks, now in a splint, but the condition is slowly deteriorating. The NHS consultant says it's calcaneovalgus and there is nothing to worry about and we can wait (my baby is 8mths) but another consultant we saw privatly says it's CVT and he recommends surgery asap - who do we believe, and does anyone know the outcome of such surgery (how effective?). What are the downsides of waiting, or should we go for it now she is still young. She also can't sit unaided yet.
Any help /advice/ good and bad experiences welcome.

Hi this area is not one of my specialties but the limited knowledge I do have I will share. Congenital vertical talus presents as a rigid flatfoot and the calcaneus (heel bone) is in an equinus position (position of deformity in which the foot is pointing downwards). The achilles tendon is tight and forefoot is often abducted (twisted outwards). Surgery is indicated if casting fails and the surgeon releases the contracted peroneus tertius, as well as an abnormal band of the inferior retinaculum causing a tether from the tibia to the calcaneus. Changes are made to the calcaneocuboid joint and other tendons.

To diagnose between the two conditions you need to visit pediatric consultants. If you are unsure, visit a third consultant before you decide on the next treatment plan. Make sure you are happy with the situation and the explanations given by the consultant. Sorry I could not be of more help, best of luck.

Thanks for this, I appreciate your taking time to reply.  We have two more appointments with consultants, I hope we can get to a 3 out of 4 consensus on this. From everything I have been reading and your explanation, my feeling goes towards a CVT unfortunately, as the foot is truely deformed and not just twisted.
Do you know if there is a parent or patient group about this in the UK where we could talk with people who have had this operation and how they are now?
